Early Life and Education
Anton Poliakov was born on November 11, 1987, in Chernihiv, Ukraine. He came from a large family with two brothers and a sister. In 2004, he graduated from Chernihiv College No. 11 and later served in the Internal Troops of the Ukrainian Ministry of Internal Affairs in Odessa.
Business and Civic Engagement
In 2010, Poliakov registered the trademark "Pidrakhuy" (meaning "Calculate") for a flooring store. He later opened another store called LaminateExpert.
Poliakov was actively involved in civic organizations. He led the Ukrainian Center for Combating Crime and Corruption and was a member of the Chernihiv Youth City Council. He was also the founder and ideologist of the Chernihiv Youth Business Club, which promoted entrepreneurship among young people.
Political Career
Poliakov's political career began in 2019 when he ran as a candidate for the Servant of the People party in the parliamentary elections. He was elected as a People's Deputy of Ukraine, representing the 206th electoral district of Chernihiv Oblast.
In the Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian Parliament), Poliakov served on the Anti-Corruption Policy Committee and chaired the subcommittee on compliance with anti-corruption legislation in the defense industry sector. He initiated nearly 100 draft laws and spoke more than 100 times from the parliament's podium.
Poliakov opposed the opening of the land market in Ukraine. He resigned from the Servant of the People party on December 16, 2019, after facing pressure for refusing to vote for laws lifting the moratorium on tariff increases and opening the land market.
In June 2020, Poliakov joined the parliamentary group "For the Future." He announced his intention to run for mayor of Chernihiv in the 2020 local elections as a member of this party.
Record-Breaking Legislator
Poliakov gained notoriety for submitting an unprecedented number of amendments to a single draft law, namely Bill 2571-D on changes to banking regulations. He submitted over 6,000 amendments, claiming they aimed to protect private property rights and combat potential "raiding schemes."
Death and Controversy
On October 8, 2021, Poliakov passed away in Kyiv from acute coronary failure and ischemic heart disease. Alcohol and methadone were detected in his bloodstream.
Poliakov's death sparked controversy. MP Anna Skorokhod alleged foul play, while journalist Anatoly Shariy pointed to a strangulation mark on Poliakov's neck. Forensic experts initially attributed the marks to a chain necklace that may have gotten caught during the rescue attempt, but the circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear.
Personal Life
Poliakov was married to Halyna Poliakova and had two daughters, Zlatoслава and Eva. At the time of his death, he was reportedly in a relationship with MP Anna Skorokhod.
