Born in Duranzo, Uruguay, Antonio Alzamendi began his professional football career in the late 1970s. He played as a striker for various clubs in Uruguay, including Peñarol and Nacional, winning the Uruguayan Championship titles in 1983 and 1985.

International Recognition

Alzamendi's talent caught the attention of the Uruguayan national team, and he made his international debut in 1981. He participated in two FIFA World Cups, in 1986 and 1990, and played a key role in Uruguay's triumph in the 1983 and 1987 Copa América tournaments.

Triumphs with River Plate

In 1986, Alzamendi joined the Argentine club River Plate, where he reached the pinnacle of his career. That year, he led the team to victory in the Copa Libertadores and the Intercontinental Cup, earning the title of Man of the Match in the latter competition against Steaua Bucharest.
