Biography of Antonio Marras

Antonio Marras is an Italian fashion designer who first made a name for himself in the fashion industry in 1987. Marras never studied fashion design in specialized schools, but his unstoppable need for self-expression and a bit of luck helped him break into the global fashion scene.

Marras was born on January 21, 1961 in Alghero, a large city on the west coast of Sardinia, Italy. He grew up surrounded by fabric scraps and remnants in his father's workshop, developing a passion and keen understanding of textiles from an early age. One day, he convinced an entrepreneur from Rome to entrust him with creating a ready-to-wear clothing collection.

In July 1996, Marras made his debut in haute couture. It was the first of many journeys for the designer, a very personal interpretation of collective memories, such as Italian women who emigrated to Argentina with their families in search of a better life, women who worked in coal mines instead of their husbands and sons, and delicate creatures from the Middle Ages.

Marras' collections are perceived as narratives, stylistic explorations where each detail holds symbolic meaning. The designer's taste for contrasts plays an important role, with burn marks on delicate fabrics, fringes made of burlap alongside luxurious embroidery, and raw edges on brocade.

In March 1999, Marras presented his first ready-to-wear collection under his own brand, 'Antonio Marras', in Milan. In June 2002, during 'Pitti Uomo', a men's fashion exhibition in Florence, he showcased his first men's collection. Starting from January 2003, Marras' menswear shows regularly take place in Milan during Fashion Week.

In September 2003, the French group 'LVHM' appointed Antonio Marras as the artistic director of the women's line 'Kenzo'. Despite having to travel frequently for work, Marras insists on living in Sardinia, as he believes that his native island gives him the strength to create. He resides in a large house with a workshop in Alghero, perched on a hill with a view of the sea, along with his extended family who actively participate in his work.

Among other projects, Marras created costumes for the opera production of 'Orfeo ed Euridice' presented at the grand opening of a new cultural center in Alghero. His first collection already showcased the distinctive traits of his style – contradictory shapes, symbolic ornaments, influences from different eras and cultures, nostalgic notes, and the use of vintage fabrics and garments to revive past epochs.

All these themes were fully developed in his 'Laboratory', Marras' secret room of sorts. His collections are no longer strictly ready-to-wear or haute couture; they are produced in limited quantities and are always one-of-a-kind, as they are made from fabric remnants and are not subject to mass production.

Altered forms and proportions, unconventional techniques with materials (tears, charring, inlays), vibrant and unusual embellishments transform Marras' clothing into works of art. In turn, his fashion shows become astonishing and unexpected events, where Marras himself or with the help of artists creates installations and performances. He has also organized several exhibitions and cultural events with artistic and social undertones.
