Avrum Gendler was a prolific Yiddish singer-songwriter, folklorist, and educator who left a lasting legacy in the Jewish cultural landscape.
Early Life and Education
Born in 1921 in Soroca, Bessarabia (now Moldova), Gendler was the tenth child in a poor Jewish family. His early education was at a Talmud Torah, and he later worked as a tailor.
World War II and Family Tragedy
With the onset of World War II, Gendler joined the Soviet army. After demobilization, he discovered that only he and his brother had survived the conflict. The rest of his family had been killed by Romanian occupiers or perished in battle.
Post-War Education and Career
Gendler pursued his education, completing high school and graduating from the Mendeleev Moscow Institute of Chemical Technology as a polymer engineer. He worked in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine, and upon retirement in 1992, dedicated himself to teaching at the Alef Jewish School and Gymnasium.
Yiddish Language Education
Gendler developed a curriculum for elementary Yiddish instruction, which was later published as a "Methodological Guide for Jewish Schools in Russia and Ukraine." His efforts contributed significantly to the preservation and transmission of the Yiddish language.
Musical Career
Throughout his life, Gendler performed and composed Yiddish songs. His debut album, "Mayn Shteteleh Soroke," was released in 2001. His songs appeared in the "Anthology of Contemporary Yiddish Song" and on the DVD "Freien Zikh Iz Git!" featuring the music of Zelik Bardichever.
International Recognition
Gendler became a renowned figure in the klezmer music scene, performing at festivals worldwide. He was honored as a citizen of Weimar, Germany, in recognition of his contributions to Jewish culture.
