Biography of Arkadiy Kovachevich
Arkadiy Kovachevich, a Senior Lieutenant and Guard Fighter Pilot, was born on May 3, 1919, in the village of Novo-Mirgorod, which is now part of the Kirovograd region in Ukraine. He came from a family of civil servants. Kovachevich completed three courses at the Agricultural Mechanization Technical School in Kirovograd and also joined an aeroclub. In December 1937, he enlisted in the Red Army and graduated from the Odessa Military Aviation School for Pilots in 1938.
When the Great Patriotic War broke out, Kovachevich fought as part of the 27th Fighter Aviation Regiment of the Moscow Air Defense. By February 1943, he had become the commander of the 9th Guard Fighter Aviation Regiment and had already completed 356 combat missions, personally shooting down 13 enemy planes and 6 more as part of a group. On May 1, 1943, he was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union for his bravery and military prowess in battles against the enemy.
During the war, Kovachevich flew a total of 520 successful combat missions and participated in 150 aerial battles, personally shooting down 26 enemy planes and 6 more as part of a group. After the war, he continued to serve in the Air Force. In 1948, he graduated from the Air Force Academy and in 1954, from the General Staff Academy. Kovachevich served as the Deputy Chief of the Air Force Academy and later lived in the town of Monino, Moscow Oblast. He was awarded the Lenin, October Revolution, Red Banner (three times), First Class of the Patriotic War, Red Star (twice), and "For Service in the Armed Forces of the USSR" (Third Class) orders, as well as various medals for combat merit, defense of Moscow, and defense of Stalingrad. He was also an honorary citizen of the Shchyolkovo district in Moscow Oblast.
Throughout his military career, Kovachevich demonstrated exceptional skill and valor as a pilot. He was known for his numerous victories in aerial combat and his dedication to protecting his country. His contributions and achievements made him an esteemed member of the 9th Guard Fighter Aviation Regiment, and he remained proud of his service even years after the war. Kovachevich passed away, leaving behind a legacy of bravery and heroism.
