Early Life and Education

Nikolai Mikhailovich Gusarov was born on December 4, 1917, in Novoselki, Orlov Oblast, Russia. The son of a farmer, he completed two years of study at the Orel Seed Breeding College before joining the Red Army in 1936. In 1939, Gusarov graduated from the Kachin Military Aviation School of Pilots.

Military Career and World War II

Gusarov began his military career in the 1939 liberation campaign in Western Ukraine. During World War II, he served as a navigator in the 486th Fighter Aviation Regiment, rising to the rank of major. Gusarov made his mark on July 5, 1943, when he shot down one enemy fighter and rammed another over Ponyri, Kursk Oblast.

By November 1943, Gusarov had flown 432 combat sorties, with 69 air battles to his credit. He had downed 15 enemy aircraft individually and 14 as part of a group. For his bravery, Gusarov was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union on February 4, 1944. He continued to fight until the end of the war.

Post-War and Retirement

After the war, Gusarov completed the Higher Officer Flight and Tactical Courses in 1949 and retired from active service in 1955 due to health reasons. He settled in the town of Zheleznodorozhny, Moscow Oblast.

Awards and Recognition

Throughout his military career, Gusarov received numerous honors, including the Order of Lenin, two Orders of the Red Banner, the Order of Alexander Nevsky, the Order of the Patriotic War 1st class, two Orders of the Red Star, and various medals.

Legacy

Nikolai Mikhailovich Gusarov passed away on September 3, 1979. He is remembered as a valiant warrior who made significant contributions to the Soviet Union's victory in World War II.
