Armen Grigoryan: A Prominent Armenian Public Figure
Early Life and EducationArmen Levonovich Grigoryan was born on January 2, 1961 in Yerevan, Armenia. He attended the Armenian State Institute of Physical Culture from 1978 to 1982, where he honed his skills in the field of physical education. Grigoryan further pursued his academic interests at the Lazaryan Institute of Oriental Studies in Yerevan, earning a PhD degree in pedagogical sciences and becoming an associate professor.
Professional Career
Grigoryan's professional journey began in the field of sports. He served as a fencing instructor at the "Burevestnik" labor council from 1981 to 1983, before becoming a senior fencing coach at the specialized fencing school of the Ministry of Education of the Armenian SSR from 1984 to 1985. He continued his coaching career at the specialized fencing school of the Yerevan City Council in 1985-1986.
From 1987 to 1996, Grigoryan transitioned to the arts sector, working as a toolmaker and production manager at the Art and Design Combine. He subsequently rose to the position of deputy director of the Art and Design Combine from 1996 to 1998.
Political and Administrative Appointments
In 1998, Grigoryan entered the realm of government and public service. He became the head of the physical culture and sports department within the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth Affairs of Armenia, a role he held until 2003. During this time, he also served as president of the Armenian Fencing Federation (from 1999) and general secretary of the Armenian National Olympic Committee (from 2001).
From 2003 to 2007, Grigoryan served as deputy chairman of the State Committee for Physical Culture and Sports under the Armenian government. His international recognition grew as he was elected as a member of the Executive Committee of the European Fencing Association in 2005.
Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs
In June 2007, Armen Grigoryan was appointed as Armenia's Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs, a position he held until recently. As minister, he has played a key role in developing and promoting sports and youth-related initiatives in Armenia. Grigoryan is also a member of the "Prosperous Armenia" political party.
