Biography of Arnold Møller
Arnold Mærsk McKinney Møller was born in 1913 in the Danish capital of Copenhagen. He was the son of Danish businessman Arnold Peter Møller, the founder of A.P. Moller – Maersk Group, and his wife, American Chastine Estelle Roberta McKinney.
Early Life and Career
Møller joined his family business in 1940 and went to the United States during World War II to oversee the company's operations there. He returned to Denmark in 1947 and took over the management of A.P. Moller – Maersk Group after his father's death in 1965. Under his leadership, the company grew into the largest Danish corporation with assets that included the world's largest container shipping company, Maersk Line, a 20% stake in Danske Bank, and a share in Dansk Supermarked Group.
Accomplishments and Philanthropy
Møller's leadership and business acumen made him a prominent figure in the corporate world. He was widely respected for his charitable projects, including the establishment of the Copenhagen Opera House in 2005. Additionally, he made significant donations towards the restoration and development of the Danish capital.
Personal Life and Legacy
Møller was married to Emma Neergaard Rasmussen, his high school sweetheart, until her death in 2005. Together, they had three daughters: Leise Mærsk McKinney Møller (born in 1941), Kirsten Mærsk McKinney Olufsen (born in 1944), and Ane Mærsk McKinney Uggla (born in 1948).
Arnold Mærsk McKinney Møller passed away on April 16, 2012, at the age of 98. His death was peaceful, occurring at Rigshospitalet, Denmark's main hospital. At the time of his death, Møller was regarded as the wealthiest person in Denmark, with an estimated personal fortune of 7.0 billion Danish kroner and company assets worth 125.4 billion Danish kroner. He left behind a lasting legacy in both the business and philanthropic sectors.
