Biography of Arthur Agabekyan

Arthur Alexandrovich Agabekyan was an Armenian statesman and military figure. He was born on November 24, 1963 in the village of Mec Taglar, NKAO. Agabekyan graduated from the Yerevan Polytechnic Institute from 1981 to 1986, majoring in Electrical Engineering.

After completing his education, Agabekyan worked as a research associate at the scientific and production association "Armselkhozmekhanizatsiya" from 1986 to 1988. However, his true calling was in the liberation struggle of Artsakh.

From 1988 to 1994, Agabekyan actively participated in the liberation movement of Artsakh. He served as the first commander of the Gadruat defensive district in the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR), and later became the head of the 4th department of the NKR Defense Army staff. In 1992, he also served as an advisor to the first chairman of the Supreme Council of NKAO.

From 1992 to 1996, Agabekyan commanded the 1st defensive district of the NKR Defense Army. He continued his military career as the commander of the 1st Southeastern Brigade of the Republic of Armenia from 1997 to 1999.

In 1999, Agabekyan was appointed Minister of Internal Affairs of the NKR by the decree of the NKR President. He later became the head of the Regional Integration Department under the Armenian Government by decision of the Prime Minister from 1999 to 2000.

Agabekyan's contributions to the defense sector were recognized when he became the Deputy Minister of Defense of Armenia from 2000 to 2007. He held the rank of Major General in 2000 and was promoted to Lieutenant General in 2003.

On May 12, 2007, Agabekyan was elected as a member of parliament and became a member of the ARFD party. He was elected as the chairman of the permanent commission on defense, national security, and internal affairs on June 7, 2007.

Throughout his career, Agabekyan was honored with several awards, including the Order of the Battle Cross of Armenia (second degree) and the Order of the Battle Cross of the NKR (first degree). He also received the Medals of Courage and Drastamat Kanayan, as well as the commemorative medal "Marshal Bagramyan - 100".
