Arturo Alessandri Palma: Chilean Statesman and President
Arturo Alessandri Palma, a prominent Chilean statesman and politician, served as the 18th and 22nd President of Chile during the 20th century. His presidency was marked by significant democratic reforms and political turmoil.
Early Life and Education
Born in Longaví, Chile, on December 20, 1868, Alessandri received his early education in provincial schools. In 1893, he graduated from the Faculty of Law at the University of Chile.
Political Career
Alessandri began his political career in 1897, when he was elected to the National Congress. He served as a Deputy until 1915, when he was elected to the Senate. During his time in Congress, he held several government positions, including Minister of Industry and Public Works (1908), Minister of Finance (1913), Prime Minister (1918), and Minister of the Interior (1918).
First Presidency (1920-1925)
In March 1920, Alessandri emerged victorious in the presidential election as the candidate of the Liberal coalition. His presidency was marked by democratic reforms, including the implementation of an 8-hour workday, compulsory social insurance, and the separation of church and state.
Coup d'état and Restoration (1925)
Political instability plagued Chile during Alessandri's first presidency. In 1924, a military coup overthrew him and established a military junta. In January 1925, another military coup led by Carlos Ibáñez del Campo and M. Valleo restored Alessandri to power.
Constitutional Reforms and Second Presidency (1925-1937)
In March 1925, Alessandri issued a decree for constitutional reforms. In September 1925, a new Chilean constitution was adopted, declaring general democratic rights and freedoms. In 1932, Alessandri was re-elected to office. During his second presidency, he focused on economic recovery and social welfare programs.
Later Life and Legacy
After completing his second presidential term in 1937, Alessandri retired from active politics. However, he returned to the Senate in 1944. Arturo Alessandri Palma passed away in Santiago on August 24, 1950.
