Biography of Ashot Kazaryan
Ashot Vagarshakovich Kazaryan was born on July 11, 1921, in the village of Chivtkilisa, now in the Tsalka district of Georgia. He was born into a peasant family and was of Armenian ethnicity. Kazaryan completed his secondary education before joining the Soviet Army in 1939.
World War II
Kazaryan participated in the Soviet-Finnish War from 1939 to 1940. When the Great Patriotic War broke out in June 1941, he became a participant in the conflict. Kazaryan demonstrated exceptional leadership skills as the commander of the tank battalion in the 117th Tank Brigade of the 1st Tank Corps, 3rd Belorussian Front.
During the East Prussian operation, from January 17 to 23, 1945, under Kazaryan's command, his tank battalion covered a distance of 150 km while engaging in fierce battles. They liberated numerous settlements, destroyed a significant amount of enemy forces and equipment, and captured approximately 1000 German soldiers. Despite being wounded, Kazaryan remained on active duty.
Hero of the Soviet Union
On March 14, 1945, Ashot Kazaryan was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, accompanied by the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal. His skilled organization of his battalion's combat actions during the East Prussian operation played a crucial role in the success of the campaign.
Post-War Career
After the war, Kazaryan continued his military service and graduated from the Military Academy of Armored and Mechanized Forces in 1949. He later served as the military commissar of the Armenian SSR. In his final years, he resided in Moscow. Ashot Kazaryan passed away on October 18, 1995, and was buried in Yerevan.
As a Major General, Kazaryan received numerous honors for his service, including the Order of Lenin, two Orders of the Red Banner, Orders of the Patriotic War 1st Class, the Red Star, and the "For Service to the Motherland in the Armed Forces of the USSR" 3rd Class. He also received multiple medals for his bravery and achievements.
