Tofig Huseynov: A Courageous National Hero
Early Life and Military ServiceTofig Huseynov was born on April 19, 1954, in Khojaly, Azerbaijan. He attended school in his hometown from 1961 to 1971. In 1974, he was conscripted into the Soviet Army, where he served until 1976.
Defense of Khojaly
When the Karabakh War broke out, Huseynov became an active participant in the defense of Khojaly. He rose through the ranks and became the commander of the town's defense forces. During this time, he earned the nickname "Mikhaylo."
Heroic Acts
Huseynov played a pivotal role in the defense of Khojaly. He led successful operations against Armenian forces, destroying several combat installations and capturing enemy soldiers. Notably, he neutralized an Armenian "Alazan" artillery unit in the village of Mehtikend, capturing 10 Armenian servicemen in the process.
Khojaly Massacre and Sacrifice
During the infamous Khojaly Massacre, Huseynov fought valiantly to defend civilians. In a desperate last stand, he detonated a grenade, killing himself and several surrounding Armenian soldiers. His heroic sacrifice saved countless lives.
National Hero and Legacy
In recognition of his extraordinary bravery, President Ayaz Mutalibov of Azerbaijan posthumously awarded Huseynov the title of National Hero of Azerbaijan (Decree No. 833, July 7, 1992). He is buried in the Alley of Martyrs in Baku.
Family and Legacy
Tofig Huseynov was married and had three children. His legacy as a courageous and self-sacrificing hero continues to be revered in Azerbaijan. He is remembered as a symbol of the nation's resistance and determination in the face of adversity.
