Early Life

Aydan Özoğuz was born on May 31, 1967, in Hamburg, to Turkish immigrants who had arrived in Germany in 1958. She grew up in the Hamburg-Lokstedt neighborhood and became a German citizen in 1989. Özoğuz has two brothers, Yavuz and Gürhan.

Education

In 1986, Özoğuz graduated from high school. In 1994, she earned a master's degree. While studying at the University of Hamburg, she became a member of the Turkish Student Association of Hamburg and served as its chairperson for two years.

Career in the Körber Foundation

From 1994 to 2001, Özoğuz worked for the Körber Foundation. She lost her position in the foundation after being elected to the Bundestag.

Political Career in Hamburg

Özoğuz served as a member of the Hamburg Parliament from 2001 to 2008. She held the position of chairperson of the SPD parliamentary group on migration policy and was a member of the committees on home affairs, family affairs, and petitions.

Membership in the SPD

Özoğuz joined the SPD in 2004. In 2011, she became the first Turkish woman to be elected deputy chair of the SPD.

Election to the Bundestag

Özoğuz was elected to the Bundestag in 2009. She served on the Committee for Family, Senior Citizens, Women, and Youth. On March 2, 2010, the SPD parliamentary group appointed Özoğuz as Commissioner for Integration.

Re-election and Appointment as Government Commissioner

In 2013, Özoğuz was re-elected to Parliament. She became one of 11 ethnic Turks and one of seven Turkish women elected to the Bundestag that year. On December 16, 2013, Özoğuz was appointed Commissioner for Immigration, Refugees, and Integration. She became the first Turkish and Muslim woman to serve in the German federal government.

Personal Life

Özoğuz is married and has a daughter.
