Varsoanofi, the Christian Saint and Ascetic
Birth and Early LifeVarsoanofi was born in Egypt, possibly in a prosperous city, where he received a substantial education and mastered several languages.
Monastic Retreat
Later in life, Varsoanofi retreated to the Monastery of Abba Serida near Gaza, Palestine. For over 50 years, he lived in seclusion in a small cell in a cave, practicing silence and subsisting on only bread and water within the monastery and in the desert.
Spiritual Gifts
Varsoanofi possessed the gift of performing miracles, including resurrecting the dead. In his isolation, he dedicated himself to prayer and achieved an extraordinary level of spiritual perfection.
Written Legacy
Accounts of Varsoanofi's life, exploits, and divine gifts are preserved in manuscripts. His guidance in the form of responses to questions posed by disciples and laypeople appear in Slavic texts from the 15th to 17th centuries.
Rediscovered Writings
In the 18th century, Elder Paisius Velichkovsky discovered two ancient Greek parchment manuscripts of Varsoanofi's "Answers" on Mount Athos. These manuscripts were translated into Moldavian and Slavic during Paisius's lifetime. In the 19th century, the Optina Monastery elders published and translated them into Russian.
Moral Exemplar
Varsoanofi's instructions demonstrate his moral excellence, love for humanity, and provide glimpses into his personal history.
Death and Legacy
The exact date of Varsoanofi's death is uncertain, with estimates ranging from 563 to around 600. His relics were brought to Italy in 850 and are currently housed in Oria, where he is revered as the town's patron saint in the Catholic Church.
Association with John the Prophet
Varsoanofi is often associated with his disciple and confidant, John the Prophet. Their spiritual teachings and correspondence, recorded by Abba Dorotheus, have been preserved.
Commemoration
Saint Varsoanofi is venerated in both the Orthodox (February 19th, Julian calendar) and Catholic (April 11th) churches.
