Early Life and Education
Beata Szydło was born on April 15, 1963, in Oświęcim, Poland. She grew up near the town of Brzeszcze, where her father worked as a miner. In 1989, she graduated from the Faculty of Ethnology at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków. She went on to pursue postgraduate studies in philosophy and history at the same university from 1989-1995. In 1997, she completed the postgraduate program for cultural managers at the Warsaw School of Economics. She also studied territorial administration at the Cracow University of Economics, graduating in 2001.
Career in Local Government
Szydło's career in local government began in 1987 when she became an assistant at the Historical Museum of the City of Kraków. She later moved to the Cultural Center in Libiąż. From 1997-1998, she served as the director of the Cultural Center in Brzeszcze. In 1998, she was elected Mayor of Brzeszcze, a position she held until 2005. She also served on the Auschwitz Powiat Council from 1998-2002, representing the Solidarity Electoral Action. In 2004, she became the vice-president of the Voluntary Fire Brigade Department in Brzeszcze.
Political Career
In 2005, Szydło joined the Law and Justice party. She was elected to the Sejm (Polish parliament) that year and re-elected in 2007 and 2011. In 2010, she became deputy leader of the Law and Justice party. In the parliamentary elections held on October 25, 2015, Law and Justice won a majority, and Szydło was nominated and approved as the Prime Minister of Poland, forming a new government.
Premiership and Later Career
Szydło served as Prime Minister of Poland from 2015-2017. She resigned on December 7, 2017, and was succeeded by Mateusz Morawiecki. She became Deputy Prime Minister in Morawiecki's government. In 2019, she ran for election to the European Parliament and was elected with 525,811 votes. She ended her tenure as Deputy Prime Minister on June 3, 2019, following her election to the European Parliament.
