Beatrice Lorenzin: Italian Politician and Health Minister

Beatrice Lorenzin is an esteemed Italian politician who served as Minister of Health in the Italian government for three consecutive terms, from 2013 to 2018.

Early Life and Career in Politics

Born in Rome in 1971, Lorenzin's political journey began in 1996 when she joined the youth organization of the Forza Italia party. She rose through the ranks, becoming coordinator of the organization in the Lazio region in 1999 and was elected to the Rome City Council in 2001. She held various administrative positions before becoming a member of Parliament in 2008.

Minister of Health

In 2013, Lorenzin was appointed Minister of Health in the Letta government. During her tenure, she introduced a series of healthcare policies, including a groundbreaking bill to restrict smoking, banning it in cars with pregnant women and minors present, as well as in outdoor areas near schools.

She continued as Minister of Health under Renzi's government in 2014 and again in the Gentiloni government in 2016. During her second term, she led the creation of the Civica Popolare civil list, which joined the centre-left coalition for the 2017 general elections.

Recent Political Activities

After the 2018 elections, Lorenzin was elected to the Chamber of Deputies as part of the left-wing coalition. In September 2019, she joined the Democratic Party.

Personal Life

Lorenzin is married to Alessandro Picardi, the former director of international relations at RAI. They have two children, Francesco and Lavinia, who were born in 2015.
