Early Life and Education
Béla Illés was born on March 22, 1895, in Kassa (present-day Kosice). He studied law at the University of Budapest.
Military and Political Involvement
In 1916, Illés was conscripted into the army and participated in the Hungarian Proletarian Revolution of 1919. After its defeat, he immigrated to other countries.
Literary Career
Illés joined the Communist Party in 1919. His experiences during the war influenced his novel "Doctor Pal Utrius' Notes" (1917). In "The Tisza Burns" (1957), he depicted the struggle for a Soviet republic in Hungary in 1919.
His trilogy "Carpathian Rhapsody" (1945) explored life and revolutionary movements in Transcarpathia. "Finding a Homeland" (1952-1954) recounted events during World War II and the liberation of Hungary.
Later Life and Recognition
Illés served as Secretary of the International Association of Revolutionary Writers from 1925 to 1933. He received the Kossuth Prize in 1950 and 1955. Illés died in Budapest in 1974.
