Legendary jazz musician Benny Carter passed away on Sunday at a hospital in Los Angeles. His musical career spanned seven decades, nearly reaching the age of 96. Until his last moments, Carter maintained clarity of mind. Born on August 8, 1907, in New York, he was originally named Bennet Lester Carter. He received his first music lessons from his mother, who played the piano. At a young age, Carter realized that he wanted to play wind instruments rather than keyboards. He saved up money to buy a trumpet and later acquired a saxophone.

Rise to fame and international recognition

In the 1920s, Benny Carter performed with many jazz orchestras and also worked as an arranger. In 1932, he formed his own orchestra in New York and invited stars of swing such as Chu Berry, Teddy Wilson, Sid Catlett, and Dickie Wells. A few years later, Carter moved to Europe and played in Paris with the Willie Lewis Orchestra. He was then invited to the United Kingdom as an arranger for the BBC dance ensemble. Carter returned to his homeland in 1938 to collaborate with Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and Glenn Miller.

Accomplishments as an arranger and composer

In the 1940s, Benny Carter's career as an arranger took off. He created thousands of arrangements for film, television, and renowned vocalists such as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Ray Charles, and many others. Carter also performed for his namesake, President Jimmy Carter, as well as his "colleagues" George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton. As a tribute to his contributions to jazz music, he received three Grammy Awards.

Benny Carter commanded universal respect among his fellow musicians. "We always called him the king; he was the most respected musician among all of us," said trumpeter Clark Terry, another jazz legend, of his friend.
