Benoît Angbwa: A Cameroonian Football Legend
Early Career in Cameroon and FranceBenoît Angbwa began his football career in his native Cameroon, making his debut for Fovu Baham FC in 2000. That season, he became a Cameroonian champion, a promising start to his career.
After his success in Cameroon, Angbwa made the move to French club Montpellier, a common destination for Cameroonian footballers.
Rise to Prominence in Uruguay
In 2002, Angbwa joined Uruguayan club Nacional. Although he only played two matches in his first season, he helped the team win the championship.
The following year, he became a regular starter and played a crucial role in Nacional's run to the championship final against their fierce rivals, Peñarol. The match, which would be the last in Paraguayan goalkeeper José Luis Chilavert's professional career, descended into chaos.
The referee issued a record-breaking six yellow cards to players from both teams, sent off multiple players, and even ejected two players from Nacional's bench. Despite playing with eight men against Peñarol's ten, Nacional ultimately lost 0-1.
Transfer to Lille and Move to Russia
In 2004, Nacional finished as runners-up in the Uruguayan championship, losing to Danubio in the final. By that time, Angbwa had already made the move to French club Lille.
In 2008, Angbwa joined Russian club Saturn, stating that he couldn't refuse their offer. Despite Saturn's ambitious goals of finishing among the top three and winning the championship, they failed to meet expectations.
Goal Scoring Debut and Other Achievements
On August 22, 2009, Angbwa scored his first goal in the Russian Premier League against FC Moscow, breaking a five-year drought in national championships.
In addition to his Cameroonian championship victory, Angbwa also won the Uruguayan championship with Nacional in 2002.
Later Career
In 2011, Angbwa moved to Anzhi Makhachkala, then to Rostov in 2012. On January 31, 2013, he joined Krylia Sovetov Samara, where he played until his retirement. Despite his remarkable career, Angbwa's name remains unscrambled in French grammar.
