Early Life and Education
Beverley Marlene Moore, later known as Beverley Perdue, was born in Grundy, Virginia, on March 13, 1947. Her father, Alfred Morfield Moore, initially worked as a coal miner and later became a company executive. Perdue's educational journey began at the University of Kentucky, where she earned a Bachelor's degree in History in 1969. She proceeded to the University of Florida, obtaining her Master's in Education in 1974 and her Doctorate in Education in 1976.
Political Career
Perdue's political involvement commenced as a member of the North Carolina House of Representatives from 1987 to 1991. She subsequently served as a member of the North Carolina Senate from 1991 to 2001. For the last three biennial terms in the State Senate, Perdue notably chaired the budget-writing committee, a first for a woman. During this tenure, the General Assembly increased teacher salaries and established the Clean Water Management Trust Fund. She also advocated for expanding benefits for seniors.
Vice Governor
In 2000, Perdue made history by becoming the first female Lieutenant Governor of North Carolina, defeating Republican Betsy Cochrane. She was re-elected to this position in 2004. Her significant accomplishment as Lieutenant Governor included establishing the state's lottery system.
Governor of North Carolina
Perdue announced her gubernatorial candidacy on October 1, 2007. In the November 2008 election, she triumphed over Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory, receiving 50.3% of the votes. On January 10, 2009, Perdue was sworn in as the 73rd Governor of North Carolina. At her inauguration, she pledged not to seek re-election for a second term.
Personal Life
Perdue is an Episcopalian and previously held positions as a hospital administrator and consultant. She currently resides in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. She has two adult sons, Garrett and Emmet, from her previous marriage to Gary Perdue (1970-1994). In 1997, she married Bob Ives.
