Early Political Career: Progressive Conservative and Conservative Representation

Stephen McNeil embarked on his political journey representing the Nova Scotian electoral district of Cumberland-Colchester-Musquodoboit Valley. He initially affiliated with the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada, later transitioning to its successor, the Conservative Party of Canada.

Expulsion from Conservative Caucus

On June 5, 2007, McNeil's tenure with the Conservative Party came to an abrupt end. He was expelled from the party caucus for casting a vote against the government budget.

Re-election as Independent

Despite no longer being a member of the Conservative caucus, McNeil's support among his constituents remained strong. In the 2008 election, he successfully contested the election as an independent, securing an overwhelming majority.

Return to Federal Politics with Liberal Party

After a hiatus from federal politics, McNeil returned in the 2015 election. This time, however, he represented the Liberal Party of Canada. He once again achieved a resounding victory.
