Biography of William Hicks

William Hicks was an American comedian, satirist, and musician. He was born in Valdosta, Georgia, to Jim and Mary Hicks. His family lived in various states including Florida, Alabama, and New Jersey before settling in Houston, Texas.

As a child, Hicks was raised in the Southern Baptist faith, and it was during his time in Sunday school that he first tried his hand at comedy. He idolized comedians Woody Allen and Richard Pryor and began honing his skills as a performer. His parents were initially suspicious of his passion for comedy and even took him to a psychoanalyst, who assured them that his interests were harmless.

In 1978, Hicks, along with his friends Dwight Slade, Ben Dunn, John S., and Kevin Booth, started performing at a comedy club in Houston. Initially, it was challenging for Hicks to perform alone due to his young age, and he required special permission to work. However, by the fall of 1978, he had settled into his new profession and had dedicated Thursday nights to his performances while still attending school.

After graduating from school, Hicks began traveling across the country. Over time, he realized that performing the same material repeatedly did not contribute to his professional growth. Seeking inspiration, Hicks started experimenting with alcohol and drugs, believing they would help him discover something new. However, he soon realized the dangers of this path and that his success as a comedian stemmed from his commitment to always speaking the truth, no matter how uncomfortable it might be.

Although he quit drinking and drugs, Hicks continued to smoke cigarettes, which became a recurring element in his performances. His humor often targeted common superstitions and beliefs, challenging his audience to think independently. He openly criticized consumerism, conformity, and the banality of modern culture, referring to them as tools of the ruling class that made people dull and apathetic.

Tragically, Hicks passed away from pancreatic cancer at the age of 32. He had been diagnosed with the disease in the summer of 1993 when it had already spread to his liver. Even in the face of such a devastating prognosis, Hicks managed to find humor in his situation and often alluded to his illness in his performances. Only his closest friends and family knew about his diagnosis. His final performance took place on January 6, 1994.

In his last months, Hicks spent time with his parents, sharing his favorite music and watching documentaries about his interests. He also immersed himself in Tolkien's "The Fellowship of the Ring". On February 14, after saying goodbye to his friends, Hicks stopped speaking. His legacy as a comedian, satirist, and truth-teller has continued to inspire and influence generations of performers.
