American Writer and Queer Activist

Glennon Doyle Melton is an American writer and queer activist known for her books, including "Untamed," "Love Warrior," and "Carry On, Warrior." Doyle is also the creator of the online community Momastery and the founder and president of Together Rising, an all-women-led nonprofit that supports women, families, and children in crisis.

Early Life and Education

Born in Burke, Virginia, and raised with one sister, Amanda Doyle, she has often written and spoken about her early struggles with bulimia and addiction. In her 2013 TEDx talk "Lessons from a Psych Ward," she discusses her time in a psychiatric hospital as a teenager. In 1999, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from James Madison University and subsequently became a teacher in Northern Virginia.

Writing Career

In 2009, Doyle began blogging on her website Momastery, sharing "a glimpse into her life as a progressive Christian raising three kids." Her debut memoir, "Carry On, Warrior," was published in 2013. While the book integrates her faith with themes of honesty and authenticity, her subsequent works gradually moved away from a primarily religious focus.

"Love Warrior," her follow-up memoir, was released in 2016. It was selected for Oprah's Book Club 2.0 in September 2016. Her third memoir, "Untamed," was published in 2020. In April 2020, it was chosen for Reese Witherspoon's Book Club (Hello Sunshine • Book Club).

"Untamed" and Its Impact

As of February 2021, "Untamed" has sold over two million copies. A television series based on "Untamed" is in development with J.J. Abrams' production company, with Sarah Paulson set to play the lead role. Doyle stated that Paulson was the only actress who auditioned for the part, and that she is the perfect person to portray her because she is "somebody who is a shape-shifting actor who is in touch with the world and cares about things that we care about, and is a weirdo."

Podcasting and Philanthropy

In May 2021, Doyle launched the podcast "We Can Do Hard Things," which features her wife, Abby Wambach, and her sister, Amanda. It explores similar themes as "Untamed."

Doyle is also a founder of Together Rising, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded on May 25, 2012. As of December 2020, Together Rising has raised over $25 million for those in need. Together Rising exists to "turn collective heartbreak into effective action."

Awards and Recognition

In 2014, Doyle and Momastery were named as winners in Parents' "Best of Social Media All-Stars" category. Doyle was included in Fast Company's Queer 50 list in 2021. She appears on Oprah's SuperSoul 100 and has been featured in O, The Oprah Magazine, The Atlantic, Newsweek, and Glamour, among other outlets.

Personal Life

Doyle was married to Craig Melton, a former model, until 2016, and they have three children together. The family relocated from Centreville, Virginia, to Naples, Florida.

Doyle met Abby Wambach while on a book tour. Doyle announced her relationship with Wambach in November 2016, and they married on May 14, 2017. They relocated to Hermosa Beach, California, in 2021, purchasing a $6.5 million home.

Doyle, Wambach, and Melton currently "co-parent" the three children, and Doyle has stated that they all get together for dinner once a week.
