Biography of Boris Tarasyuk

Boris Ivanovich Tarasyuk was born on January 1, 1949 in Dzerzhinsk, Zhitomir region, Ukrainian SSR. He began his career as a Soviet and Ukrainian diplomat, serving in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of the Ukrainian SSR and later the independent Republic of Ukraine. Tarasyuk worked in various positions within the MFA, starting from 1975 as an attaché and eventually becoming the Minister of Foreign Affairs in April 1998.

Diplomatic Career

After completing his service in the border troops of the KGB of the USSR, Tarasyuk pursued a degree in International Relations and International Law at the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, graduating in 1975. He then joined the MFA of the Ukrainian SSR, where he held positions ranging from third secretary to first secretary. In 1981, Tarasyuk was assigned to the Permanent Mission of Ukraine to the United Nations in New York, where he worked as a second secretary and eventually became the first secretary. He continued his diplomatic career within the MFA of the Ukrainian SSR, holding positions such as head of the Department of International Organizations, instructor at the International Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine, and deputy chief adviser of the MFA of Ukraine.

In 1992, Tarasyuk became the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, overseeing arms control, disarmament, and relations with the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and the Council of Europe. He later served as the First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, and in April 1998, he was appointed as the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.

Political Career

Following his tenure as Minister of Foreign Affairs, Tarasyuk embarked on a political career. He became the director of the Institute of Social Sciences and International Relations at the Interregional Academy of Personnel Management. He also founded a non-governmental organization, the Institute of Euro-Atlantic Cooperation. Tarasyuk joined the "Reforms and Order" party and was elected as a member of the Verkhovna Rada, the Ukrainian parliament, in April 2002.

In May 2003, Tarasyuk was elected as the leader of the "Narodny Rukh Ukrainy" (People's Movement of Ukraine) party. He continued his political career, serving as the Minister of Foreign Affairs in the governments of Yulia Tymoshenko and Yuriy Yekhanurov. Tarasyuk was re-elected as a member of the Verkhovna Rada in April 2006.

Despite facing opposition and attempts to remove him from the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs, Tarasyuk remained in office while the legality of his dismissal was being contested in court. Eventually, on January 30, 2007, Tarasyuk voluntarily resigned from his post as Minister of Foreign Affairs. After his resignation, he expressed his intention to focus on politics as the leader of the "Narodny Rukh Ukrainy" party, collaborating with other national-patriotic parties to expose what he described as "anti-people and anti-state" actions by the parliamentary coalition and the government.
