Biography of Borislav Mihaylov
Borislav Mihaylov is a Bulgarian football goalkeeper and the chief football executive of Bulgaria. He started his career at the same club where his father, Bisser Mihaylov, became famous - Levski Sofia. During his eight seasons with Levski, Mihaylov won six trophies, including three national championships and two national cups. In 1986, he moved to the Portuguese Super League and played for Belenenses for two seasons. He then played for the oldest French football club, Mulhouse, in the second division of the French championship for three seasons.
In 1994, Mihaylov, at the age of 31, had a brilliant performance in the FIFA World Cup in the USA, where his team reached the semi-finals and eventually finished fourth. After returning to Bulgaria, he joined Plovdiv's Botev and played for them for two years until he received an invitation from English club Reading, who had just sold their goalkeeper Shaka Hislop to West Ham United. Botev received £800,000 for this transfer. After two unsuccessful seasons in England, Mihaylov returned to Sofia to play for Slavia, and he ended his playing career in Switzerland's Zurich.
In his international career, Mihaylov made his debut for the Bulgarian national team on May 4, 1983, in a match against Cuba. He participated in the 1986 FIFA World Cup in Mexico, playing four matches, the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the USA, playing seven matches, and the 1996 UEFA European Championship in England, playing three matches. He was also included in the squad for the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France but did not play any matches in the tournament. His last game for the national team was a friendly match against Algeria on June 5, 1998, which Bulgaria won 2-0.
Since 2000, Mihaylov has been a member of the Executive Committee of the Bulgarian Football Union and the Deputy Chairman of the State Agency for Youth and Sports. In 2001, he became the first vice president of the Bulgarian Football Union, and on October 21, 2005, he replaced Ivan Slavkov as the president of the organization.
Mihaylov is married to former gymnast Maria Petrova, and their son, Nikolay Mihaylov, is currently a goalkeeper for Dutch club Twente. During his career, Mihaylov won several awards and broke records, including being named Bulgarian Player of the Year in 1986 and holding the record for the most appearances for the Bulgarian national team (102) and the most appearances as captain (60).
