Early Life and Education

Born in Yugoslavia in 1951, Mirjana Marković pursued a law degree at the University of Belgrade. Her academic journey continued with internships in the United States and the Netherlands, culminating in a PhD from the United Kingdom.

Professional Career

Marković's professional career spanned various sectors. She held positions at the Economic Institute of Yugoslavia, served as Secretary of State for Foreign Trade, and led the Federal Planning Bureau. She also held the position of Minister of Industry and Construction in the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

Meeting Slobodan Milošević

In 1970, Marković's path crossed with Slobodan Milošević, who would later become President of Yugoslavia. Their acquaintance began when Milošević was appointed to the "Beogradska Banka" board of directors as a party official.

Financial Wizardry

After Milošević ascended to the Serbian presidency in 1992, he entrusted Marković with the daunting task of breaking the United Nations financial blockade. She successfully implemented an offshore financing system, which became operational during the Kosovo War. The 1998 report of "Beogradska"'s Cyprus branch revealed a staggering $5 billion in funds flowing through the bank.

Political Ascendance

In 1997, Marković became the president of "Beogradska." Her political career culminated in her election as a member of the Serbian Parliament in 2007 on behalf of the Socialist Party of Serbia. She briefly served as the Acting Speaker of the Parliament.

Tragic End

Mirjana Marković's life was cut short on August 1, 2009. She was killed in a car accident on the Belgrade-Niš highway near Lapovo.
