Early Life and Education
Butros Butros-Ghali was born on November 14, 1922, in Cairo, Egypt. He earned a Bachelor of Laws degree from Cairo University in 1946 and went on to pursue a Doctorate in International Law from the University of Paris, which he received in 1949.
Academic and Professional Career
From 1949 to 1977, Butros-Ghali served as a professor of international law and international relations at Cairo University. Concurrently, he also engaged in research and teaching at various prestigious institutions, including Columbia University, the Hague Academy of International Law, and the Faculty of Law at the University of Paris.
Political Involvement
Butros-Ghali's involvement in politics began in the 1970s. He was elected to the Egyptian parliament in 1987 and played a key role in the Arab Socialist Union as a member of its Central Committee and Politburo. He also served as Deputy Prime Minister for Foreign Affairs from 1991 until his appointment to the United Nations.
United Nations Secretary-General
On December 3, 1991, Butros-Ghali was appointed as the sixth Secretary-General of the United Nations. His five-year term commenced on January 1, 1992. During his tenure, he played a critical role in various international crises, including the conflict in the former Yugoslavia and the Rwanda genocide.
Publications and Awards
Butros-Ghali was an accomplished author, having written extensively on international relations, law, and diplomacy. He also received numerous awards and distinctions from more than 20 countries, including the prestigious Christian A. Herter Award from the Council on Foreign Relations and the Crystal Star Award from the African-American Institute.
Later Life and Legacy
Following his retirement from the United Nations in 1996, Butros-Ghali remained active in international affairs. He established the Boutros Boutros-Ghali Foundation for Peace and Development and continued to serve as a respected voice on matters of peace, human rights, and global cooperation. He passed away on February 16, 2016, leaving behind a profound legacy of service to the international community.
