Early Life and Education

Trygve Halvdan Lie was born on July 16, 1896, in Oslo, Norway. He studied law at the University of Oslo, graduating in 1919. He married Jordis Jörgensen on November 8, 1921, and they had three children.

Political Career in Norway

Lie became involved in politics at a young age, joining the Norwegian Labour Party's youth organization in 1911. He served in various government roles, including Minister of Justice (1935-1939), Minister of Trade and Industry (July-September 1939), and Minister of Supply and Shipping (1939-1940).

World War II and Exile

During World War II, Lie played a key role in preserving the Norwegian merchant fleet for the Allies after the German invasion. He fled to England in June 1940 and served as Acting Foreign Minister (December 1940) and then as full Foreign Minister (February 1941).

Founding of the United Nations

Lie led the Norwegian delegation to the San Francisco Conference in 1945, where the United Nations was established. He was elected as its first Secretary-General on February 1, 1946.

Secretary-General of the United Nations (1946-1952)

As Secretary-General, Lie faced numerous challenges, including the Cold War and the Korean War. He worked to maintain peace and promote cooperation among nations. His term was extended in 1950, but he resigned in 1952.

Post-United Nations Career

After leaving the UN, Lie served as Governor of Oslo-Akershus and Chairman of the Norwegian Council for Energy. In 1958, he was appointed by King Olav of Norway to mediate a border dispute between Ethiopia and Italy over the former Italian colony of Somalia.
