Biography of Brad Dourif
Brad Dourif is an unconventional character actor known for his portrayals of killers, sociopaths, and other "lost souls" brought to life in various horror and science fiction projects. He began his acting career after college and spent three years honing his craft at New York's Circle Repertory under the guidance of renowned playwright Sanford Meisner. Dourif starred in the play "When You Comin' Back, Red Rider?" and caught the attention of director Milos Forman, who invited him to be a part of the 1975 film adaptation of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," based on Ken Kesey's novel. Dourif's role as the suicidal youth Billy Bibbit, a patient in a psychiatric clinic, became one of the most memorable debuts in film history. He received a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor and was nominated for an Oscar.
Following his breakout performance, Dourif went on to work with Milos Forman again in the film "Ragtime" and collaborated with directors Alan Parker in "Mississippi Burning" and David Lynch in "Blue Velvet" and "Dune." However, he mainly appeared in horror, mystery, and science fiction thrillers such as "The Exorcist III," "Critters 4," "Spontaneous Combustion," and "Nightwatch." In the "Child's Play" series, Dourif played a human character in the first installment and then provided the voice for the doll Chucky in all subsequent films. Interestingly, many film critics consider his voice work in the series to be the most intriguing aspect of the movies.
For his role in the science fiction thriller "Body Parts," Dourif received a Fangoria magazine award, and he was nominated for a Genie Award in 1991 for one of the lead roles in Allen E. Goldstein's serious crime drama "Chaindance," which is considered the Canadian equivalent of the Oscars.
