Early Life and Education
Brandon Jennings was born in California to parents Bryan Jennings and Alice Cox. He attended Dominguez High School in his hometown of Compton before transferring to Oak Hill Academy in Virginia, which boasts one of the top basketball programs in the United States and has produced notable players such as Carmelo Anthony, Rajon Rondo, Stephen Jackson, and Michael Beasley.
High School Career and Accolades
Jennings demonstrated exceptional skill at the high school level and was considered one of the top young basketball prospects in the country. During the 2006-2007 season, he led his team to a 41-1 record. As a senior, he averaged 32.7 points, 7.4 assists, and 5.1 rebounds per game, setting the school's single-season scoring record. He garnered numerous accolades, including the Naismith Award for National High School Player of the Year, and ESPN analysts ranked him first on their list of the nation's top basketball recruits.
College Decision and European Stint
In April 2007, a year before graduating high school, Jennings committed to play at the University of Arizona alongside Jerryd Bayless. However, in June 2008, he failed the university's entrance exam after several attempts. Unable to play professionally in the NBA yet due to the league's eligibility rules, Jennings opted to spend a season playing professionally in Europe to gain experience and earn money before returning to the US to pursue his NBA dream.
On July 16, 2008, Jennings signed a three-year contract with Italian club Virtus Roma. He earned a salary of $1.65 million per year and received an additional $2 million from sportswear company Under Armour to represent their brand in Europe. Jennings spent one season in Italy, playing 27 games in Serie A (averaging 5.5 points, 1.6 assists, and 2.2 steals per game) and also competing in the EuroLeague.
NBA Draft and Milwaukee Bucks
In the 2009 NBA Draft, Jennings was selected with the 10th overall pick by the Milwaukee Bucks. He immediately became the team's starting point guard and made his NBA debut on October 30, 2009, against the Philadelphia 76ers, scoring 17 points and dishing out 9 rebounds and 9 assists.
On November 14, 2009, in a game against the Golden State Warriors, Jennings scored 55 points, falling just four short of Wilt Chamberlain's 1960 record for most points scored by a rookie in a single game. He broke the Bucks' franchise record previously set by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in 1970 and was three points shy of tying Michael Redd's team scoring record set in 2006.
