Branko Crvenkovski, the former President of Macedonia, was born on October 12, 1962, in Sarajevo, Bosnia. His father was an officer in the Yugoslav People's Army. In 1986, he graduated from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at the University of Skopje, specializing in programming.
Political Career
Crvenkovski began his political career in 1990 when he was elected as a Member of Parliament. A year later, he became the leader of the Social Democratic Union of Macedonia (SDSM). Following the dissolution of Yugoslavia, he initiated a referendum on the independence of Macedonia.
At the age of 30, Crvenkovski became the Prime Minister, making him the youngest in Europe. He held this position for two terms until 1998. During his tenure, he successfully formed a broad coalition called "For Macedonia - Together" to address the complex situation in the country. This coalition included social democrats, liberals, socialists, and the Party of Democratic Prosperity, which has the support of the Albanian population. It was the first time that Albanians were included in the ruling coalition.
After losing the elections in 1998, the social democrats went into opposition. However, they regained power after four years, and Crvenkovski once again became the Prime Minister.
Presidential Victory
Following the tragic death of President Boris Trajkovski in an airplane crash on February 26, Branko Crvenkovski, as the chairman of the SDSM, won a convincing victory in the extraordinary presidential elections in Macedonia.
Personal Life
Branko Crvenkovski is married and has adult children. He is also an avid basketball player.
