First Attempt and Setbacks

In May 2006, Brandon first attempted to break the existing record by kayaking 146.9 miles (236.4 km). However, he encountered two unexpected setbacks. Firstly, the seat of his 23-foot sea kayak cracked and required repairs. Secondly, during the same period, Carter Johnson set a new record, surpassing Brandon's previous attempt by covering 150.34 miles (241.8 km) on Lake Merced in California. Brandon's joy was short-lived, and the task of surpassing Carter Johnson's record seemed almost unattainable.

Determination and Preparation

Nonetheless, Brandon started preparing for his next attempt. It took him seven long years before he felt ready on August 21, 2013. At the age of 41 and as a father of two, Brandon entered the waters of Lake Padden with one goal in mind - to win at all costs.

Breaking the Record

After 24 grueling hours of paddling, Brandon achieved his goal. On August 21-22, 2013, representatives from Guinness World Records confirmed that Brandon Nelson had covered a distance of 243.4 km in 24 hours, with an average speed of 10.1 km/h. Brandon knew he was ready for this record, as his previous training sessions had shown he could paddle at an average speed of approximately 11 km/h.

Challenges and Triumph

During the endurance challenge, Brandon experienced intense fatigue, leg cramps, and gastrointestinal discomfort. However, he refused to give up, driven by the desire to overcome his failed attempt in 2006 that haunted him for seven years. Despite moments of nausea and hallucinations, Brandon pushed through and finished the race.

Personal Dedication

Brandon emerged from the water exhausted but elated. The title of world champion belonged to him. The significance of long-distance paddling is known only to those who have experienced it. Thus, Brandon Nelson's achievement was truly extraordinary. He dedicated his record, like his previous unsuccessful attempt, to his late mother.
