Early Life
Bryce Seligman DeWitt, an American theoretical physicist, was born in Dinuba, California, as the fourth son of a rural physician father and a high school principal mother. His paternal grandfather, Emil Seligman, had immigrated to California from Germany as a teenager in 1875 and converted to Methodism after marrying. DeWitt himself was raised Presbyterian. He changed his name to Bryce Seligman DeWitt in 1950 upon marrying French physicist Cecile De Witt-Morette, a renowned scholar in mathematical and gravitational physics.
Academic Career
DeWitt pursued his undergraduate, master's, and doctoral degrees in physics at Harvard University. He considered himself a student of Julian Schwinger. Following his education, he worked at the Institute for Advanced Study, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and the University of Texas at Austin. His tenure at the University of Texas lasted from 1972 until his death.
Scientific Achievements
DeWitt's significant scientific contributions include:Development of canonical quantum gravity, one of the first approaches to quantizing general relativity (completed in 1967)
Formulation of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation for the wave function of the Universe (in collaboration with John Archibald Wheeler)
Original advancements in Hugh Everett's many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics
Honors and Legacy
DeWitt was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1990 and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2002. He received numerous awards, including:
Dirac Medal (1987)
Marcel Grossmann Award (with Cecile De Witt-Morette, 2000)I. Ya. Pomeranchuk Prize from the Institute for Theoretical and Experimental Physics (Moscow, 2002)
Einstein Prize from the American Physical Society (2005)
DeWitt passed away in 2004 at the age of 81 from pancreatic cancer, leaving behind a legacy of groundbreaking research and a continuation of his ideas through the work of his colleagues and students.
