Biography of Carl Christopher Georg Andræ

Carl Christopher Georg Andræ was a Danish politician and mathematician known for his moderate views. He was born on October 14, 1812, in Vordingborg, Denmark. His father, a captain in the infantry, passed away when Andræ was only 2 years old. He attended the Army Cadet School and graduated in 1829 as a junior lieutenant. From 1830 to 1834, he underwent training at the newly established Royal Military College and excelled in all his exams.

In 1834, Andræ was promoted to the rank of lieutenant and assigned to the General Staff. He spent some time in various departments before receiving a scholarship to study mathematics and learn about the French higher military educational institutions in Paris in 1836. In 1842, Carl married Hansine Pauline Andræ, a 25-year-old woman who later became one of the first Danish feminists.

From 1842 to 1854, Georg Andræ served as a professor of mathematics and mechanics at the Royal Military College. In 1853, he was elected a member of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters. The following year, he became the Minister of Finance under the administration of Peter Georg Bang. From October 18, 1856, to May 13, 1857, Andræ served as the Prime Minister of Denmark, leading his own cabinet.

In May 1857, he was succeeded by Carl Christian Hall, who held the position of Prime Minister twice as long. Under Hall's administration, Andræ became the Minister of Finance and held the position until 1858. As an individualist, Andræ never officially joined any political group after the defeat of the National Liberal Party. However, he remained a skeptical and conservative observer of the struggle for the constitution until the end of his life.

Andræ authored several brilliant mathematical works and established himself as a talented scientist. In 1855, he was awarded the Order of the Dannebrog for his scientific contributions. Carl Christopher Georg Andræ passed away on February 2, 1893, in Copenhagen, Denmark.
