From 1845 to 1848, Allen embarked on a research journey across Europe, visiting the Netherlands, England, Italy, Germany, Sweden, and Norway to study historical archives.

Academic Career

In 1851, Allen returned to the University of Copenhagen as a privat-docent with the title of professor. In 1862, he was promoted to full professor of history and Scandinavian archaeology.

Major Works

Allen's most significant historical works include "Håndbog i Fædrelandets Historie" (1840), "Lærebog i Fædrelandets Historie" (1842), and "De tre nordiske Rigers Historie" (1864-72). The latter, though unfinished, is considered a masterpiece of Scandinavian historiography.

In addition to his historical scholarship, Allen also authored political works, including "Om sprog og Folkeejendommelighed i Hertugdømmet Slesvig eller Sønderjylland" (1848) and "Det Danske Sprogs Historie i Hertugdømmet Slesvig eller Sønderjylland" (1857-58).
