Biography of Carmontel

Carmontel, the French poet, artist, and architect, was born on August 15, 1717, in Paris, in a cobbler's family. He first drew attention to himself with successful portraits and graceful dramatic plays. As a result, he was offered a position as a lecturer for the Duke of Orleans. Most of his plays belonged to the popular genre of dramatic proverbs, which were later collected into several volumes. Despite earning well, Carmontel often experienced financial difficulties. During these periods, he would pawn his manuscripts and always received money for them. Despite the popularity of his work, only one of his numerous plays was presented on stage in 1777.

Louis Carmontel also gained fame as a landscape designer. In 1774, he arranged the Monceau Park in Paris for his client, creating sculptural figures from plant masses. He proposed to "transfer the changes happening on the opera stage to our gardens." In addition to plays, Carmontel wrote three novels and several critical brochures about art exhibitions. A large number of portraits by Carmontel, which have historical interest, are preserved in the collection of the Duke of Omsk.

Carmontel lived a long and fruitful creative life and passed away on December 26, 1806, in Paris, at the age of 89.
