Biography of Catherine de' Medici

Catherine de' Medici was the Queen of France from 1547 to 1559. Born on April 13, 1519, in Florence, she was the daughter of Lorenzo II de' Medici, the Duke of Urbino, and a French princess from the Bourbon family, Magdalene of La Tour d'Auvergne.

Marriage to Henry II

In 1533, thanks to the efforts of her uncle, Catherine was married to Henry II, the Duke of Orleans, who later became the King of France. They had a total of 10 children, out of which 4 boys and 3 girls survived.

Limited Influence and Regency

Despite her royal position, Catherine did not have much influence at the court. She was constantly overshadowed by her husband's mistress, Diane de Poitiers. However, everything changed in 1559 when Henry tragically died, followed by the death of their eldest son and Henry's successor, Francis II, in 1560. Catherine then became the regent for her young son, Charles IX, which instantly made her the most powerful figure in the kingdom.

Quest for Power

As the regent, Catherine finally had the opportunity to satisfy her thirst for power, a desire that had been hidden within her as a member of the Medici family. She was known for her ability to weave intrigues and plot cunning schemes.

Infamous Actions

Catherine's actions were often ruthless and she showed no mercy to those who opposed her. She even burned her enemies at the stake. However, her most infamous act was the organization of the brutal St. Bartholomew's Day massacre, a massacre between Catholics and Huguenots.

Ruling France

After the religious wars, Catherine de' Medici became the ruler of France. In addition to her political power, she gained the notorious nickname "the Great Manipulator" of the kingdom.

Overall, Catherine de' Medici was a powerful and cunning queen who left a dark legacy in French history.
