Early Life and DebutMaria Coltellini was an Italian soprano born to Marco Coltellini, a playwright and librettist. Her vocal debut took place in 1780 at the renowned La Scala in Milan, followed by a performance at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples the following year.
Viennese Triumph
In 1785, Emperor Joseph II extended an invitation to Coltellini to perform on the Viennese stage. She captivated audiences for four seasons, with intermittent breaks. During her time in Vienna, Coltellini garnered critical acclaim, and renowned composer Giovanni Paisiello penned several operas specifically for her, including "La Cuffiara," "La Molinara," and "Nina pazza per amore."
Return to Naples and Legacy
Upon her return to Naples, Coltellini married a wealthy banker. Despite her absence from the stage, her performances and contributions remained etched in the annals of opera history. Her exquisite vocal abilities and the enduring charm of her character made her one of the most celebrated sopranos of her era.
