In 1997, he graduated from the University of California, San Diego, with a unique degree in the history of science, business, and surfing.

Joining Switchfoot

Prior to joining Switchfoot, Butler was a member of Chin Up, a precursor band to the current lineup. Alongside Jon and Tim Foreman, he played an instrumental role in the band's evolution.
