Chad Butler: Percussionist and Drummer Extraordinaire

Chad Butler, renowned for his exceptional drum and percussion skills, has been an integral member of the alternative rock band Switchfoot since its inception. His musical journey began long before, however, with his involvement in various college bands.

Early Influences and Collegiate Years

Butler's formative years were marked by the profound influence of musical icons such as The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, The Police, and U2. These artists ignited his passion for music, driving him to pursue his dreams relentlessly. In 1997, he graduated from the University of California, San Diego, with a unique degree in the history of science, business, and surfing.

Joining Switchfoot

Prior to joining Switchfoot, Butler was a member of Chin Up, a precursor band to the current lineup. Alongside Jon and Tim Foreman, he played an instrumental role in the band's evolution. His exceptional percussion skills and rhythmic sensibilities became a defining characteristic of Switchfoot's sound.

Personal Life

Butler currently resides in San Diego, California, surrounded by his loving family. His wife Tina and three children—Evan, Dylan, and Charlotte—bring joy and fulfillment to his life. Outside of music, Butler enjoys surfing, a passion that reflects his lifelong connection to the ocean.
