Cheryl Gillan: Early Life and Education
Cheryl Gillan's early life was shaped by her family's military background. Born into a family of military personnel, Gillan spent her first eleven years on family farms near Abergavenny, Wales. After graduating from Cheltenham Ladies' College and the College of Law, Gillan pursued a career in marketing in the private sector.
Political Career in the Conservative Party
Gillan's political journey began in 1992, when she was elected as Conservative MP for Chesham and Amersham in Buckinghamshire. She immediately aligned herself with the "New Start" movement, which sought to prevent Britain from joining the Maastricht Treaty.
Despite her opposition to the treaty, Gillan served as a junior minister in the Department for Education and Employment in John Major's cabinet. After the Conservatives' defeat in the 1997 election, she held shadow ministerial roles in various domains, including trade and industry, foreign affairs, and international development.
In 2005, Gillan joined David Cameron's shadow cabinet as Shadow Secretary of State for Wales. In May 2010, she was appointed Secretary of State for Wales in Cameron's first cabinet.
Minister for Wales and Cabinet Reshuffle
As Minister for Wales, Gillan held the portfolio until September 2012, when she was relieved of her post during a cabinet reshuffle. Despite her departure from the cabinet, she remained a vocal advocate for Wales and continued to serve as MP for her constituency.
Personal Life and Controversy
Cheryl Gillan has been married to Jack Leeming. In 2012, a scandal erupted when it was discovered that Gillan had sold her house, located near the planned route of a high-speed rail line, just weeks before the government approved the project.
Neighbors accused the couple of hypocrisy, but Gillan's family defended their actions, stating that the house had been listed for sale in 2010 due to the couple's difficulty with stairs. They also claimed that the house was sold below its asking price.
