Biography of Chris Barnes
Chris Barnes is an American vocalist and lyricist, best known as the frontman of the death metal band Cannibal Corpse. He has been the vocalist of the American death metal band Six Feet Under since 1995. In addition to his work with these two bands, Barnes also collaborated with the Finnish death metal group Torture Killer, recording their album "Swarm!" in the fall of 2005. The album was released on February 24, 2006. However, Barnes left the group in 2008.
Support for Marijuana Reform
After his departure from Cannibal Corpse, specifically after the album "The Bleeding", Chris Barnes slightly shifted the focus of his lyrics to more socio-political themes, most notably in his support for the legalization of marijuana. The album "Warpath" features two songs that mention marijuana. The first one, titled "4:20", glorifies the effects of consuming marijuana, while the second one, "Caged and Disgraced", raises the issue of arrests related to marijuana possession. The album's booklet also mentions the website of the "National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws" and states that the song "4:20" (which lasts for 4 minutes and 20 seconds) was recorded on April 20th at 4:20 PM, the "national day and traditional time for smoking marijuana". Furthermore, the album "Maximum Violence" includes the song "Victim of the Paranoid", which further explores the laws surrounding marijuana, portraying marijuana users as victims of a system overly concerned with its consumption and neglectful of more serious issues. Similar to ex-Pantera vocalist Phil Anselmo, Chris Barnes is known as a marijuana smoker who openly promotes the plant both on stage and in interviews.
Early Career
Chris Barnes began his career in extreme metal music at the age of 19. His first band was a death/thrash metal group called Tirant Sin, formed in his hometown of Buffalo in 1986. The other members of Tirant Sin included drummer Paul Mazurkiewicz, guitarists Bob Rusay and Joe Morelli, and bassist Rich Ziegler. In 1986, Barnes also performed vocals for another New York-based death/thrash metal band called Leviathan, and they released a demo titled "Legions of Undead" in 1987.
In December 1988, Chris Barnes, along with his friends from Tyrant Sin, Paul Mazurkiewicz and Bob Rusay, joined the emerging band Cannibal Corpse. They were joined by bassist Alex Webster and guitarist Jack Owen from the local band Beyond Death.
