Steven Isserlis, Celebrated British Cellist
Early Life and EducationBritish cellist Steven Isserlis embarked on his musical journey at the Yehudi Menuhin School under the tutelage of renowned cellist Maurice Gendron. His talent was evident early on, as he emerged victorious at the prestigious Naumburg Competition for Young Artists in 1981.
Teaching and Academy
Isserlis's passion for both performance and pedagogy has led him to share his knowledge. From 1982 to 1998, he held a professorship at the New England Conservatory in Boston, where he inspired generations of aspiring cellists. In 1998, he returned to his home country and became a professor at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he continues to guide young musicians to excellence.
Solo and Chamber Repertoire
Isserlis's repertoire spans the breadth of cello music, from the intricate counterpoint of Bach's unaccompanied cello suites (which he has famously recorded in their entirety) to the modernist works of 20th-century composers such as Britten and Kodály. His virtuosity and deep musicality have garnered him immense acclaim.
Trio Collaborations and Orchestral Performances
Beyond his solo performances, Isserlis has made significant contributions to chamber music. He is renowned for his collaborations with pianist David Golub and violinist Mark Kaplan as part of their celebrated trio. Their joint recordings include works by Schubert, Brahms, and Tchaikovsky. Notably, they have performed the Beethoven Triple Concerto with renowned orchestras worldwide.
