Biography of Christian II
Christian II was born on July 1, 1481, in Nyborg, Denmark. He was the son of King Hans and the grandson of Christian I. Christian became the King of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden.
Rise to Power
Christian proved himself to be a capable administrator when he served as the regent of Norway from 1502 to 1513. In 1513, he became the King of Denmark and Norway. In 1515, Christian married Isabella, the sister of the future Holy Roman Emperor Charles V.
The Swedish Conflict
A conflict arose in Sweden between Gustav Trolle and Sten Sture the Younger, both of whom contested the regency. Christian saw an opportunity to intervene and bring Sweden back into the union. He suffered two defeats but eventually succeeded on his third attempt in 1520 when Sten Sture was fatally wounded in the Battle of Bogesund.
The defenders of Stockholm, who were prepared to fight until the end, surrendered when Christian promised amnesty to the rebels. However, the king broke his promise and carried out the infamous Stockholm Bloodbath, executing around 100 prominent individuals.
Exile and Imprisonment
After spending a year in the Netherlands, Christian returned to Denmark and implemented radical reforms, including the issuance of a legal code. However, the Danes revolted against the encroachment on their freedoms. Under the leadership of Gustav I Vasa, both the Swedes and the Danes rebelled. In 1523, Gustav was elected as the King of Sweden, which ended Sweden's participation in the Kalmar Union.
Christian was subsequently expelled from Denmark, and his uncle, the Duke of Holstein, Frederick I, was chosen as the new king of Denmark and Norway. In November 1531, Christian attempted to land in Norway but suffered defeat and was taken prisoner by Frederick. He remained in captivity for the rest of his life, initially in Sønderborg Castle and later in Kalundborg Castle, where he died on January 25, 1559.
