King Inge II of Norway
Birth and FamilyBorn in an unknown year as the son of Bård Guttormsson and Cecilia Sigurdsdotter, Inge Bårdsson was the nephew of King Sverre Sigurdsson.
Reign as King
In August 1204, after the death of the infant Guttorm Sigurdsson, Inge Bårdsson was elected King of Norway. He skillfully navigated the ongoing civil war, maintaining peaceful relations with his rivals from the Bagler party, Erling Magnusson and Philip Simonsson.
Alliance with Skuli
Inge's half-brother, Skuli, played a significant role during his reign. His influence increased further under King Håkon IV, who bestowed upon him the title of Earl.
Håkon Håkonsson's Protection
In 1206, Inge took the young Håkon Håkonsson under his protection. Håkon had fled with his mother from the Bagler-controlled city of Hamar.
End of the Civil War
Upon Inge's death, Håkon was proclaimed King Håkon IV. His recognition by both the Birkebeiner and Bagler parties marked the end of the Norwegian civil war.
