Early Career and Club Football
Cristian Rodríguez, a renowned Uruguayan footballer, began his professional career with the Uruguayan powerhouse Peñarol in 2002. He enjoyed a championship victory in 2003, alongside the legendary Paraguayan goalkeeper José Luis Chilavert. After recovering from a significant injury in 2004, Rodríguez moved to Paris Saint-Germain in 2005. Despite a mediocre first season, he played a pivotal role in the club's survival in Ligue 1 during his second year, scoring a crucial goal against Monaco.
Success with Benfica and Porto
Seeking to escape the relegation battle, Rodríguez joined Portuguese giants Benfica on loan for the 2007/08 season. In 2008, he transferred to Porto and formed a formidable attacking trio with Argentinean midfielder Lucho González and Brazilian striker Hulk. Rodríguez's remarkable performances earned him a contract extension in 2012.
Atletico Madrid and Later Career
On May 2012, Rodríguez signed a four-year contract with Atletico Madrid. He scored his first goal for the club against Real Valladolid in 2013. In 2015, he was loaned to Parma for the remainder of the season, but returned to Atletico in June.
International Football
Rodríguez made his international debut for Uruguay at the age of 18 in a match against Mexico. He participated in three Copa América tournaments, scoring a goal in the quarter-finals against Venezuela in 2007. In 2011, he helped Uruguay win the Copa América championship. With over 100 appearances for the national team, Rodríguez ranks fourth in Uruguay's history for most matches played.
