Gunnar Gunnarsson is an Icelandic professional footballer who currently plays as a goalkeeper and captain for Breidablik in the Icelandic Premier League.
Early Life and Football
Gunnarsson's passion for football ignited at the age of six while watching the 1982 FIFA World Cup. Inspired by the performance of Soviet goalkeeper Rinat Dasayev, he decided to pursue a career in goalkeeping.
Club Career
Early YearsGunnarsson began his senior career with his hometown club Kopavogur in 1994. He spent the majority of his career there, making his debut in the Icelandic Premier League on September 3, 1994.
Reykjavik and Foreign Adventure
In 1998, Gunnarsson joined Reykjavik, with whom he won the Icelandic League and Cup in 1999. In 2009, he had a brief stint with Liechtenstein's Vaduz, winning the Liechtenstein Cup.
Habnarfjordur Success
From 2010 to 2012, Gunnarsson played for Habnarfjordur, where he won two Icelandic Super Cups (2010, 2011) and the Icelandic Premier League in 2012.
Breidablik
Since joining Breidablik in 2013, Gunnarsson has won the Icelandic Cup in 2015. He made history in 2016 when Iceland qualified for their first major international tournament, UEFA Euro 2016.
International Career
Gunnarsson made his debut for Iceland in 2000. He has played 26 games for his country and represented them in the qualifiers for the 2010 FIFA World Cup and 2012 UEFA European Championship.
Other Activities
Beyond his football career, Gunnarsson has completed several coaching seminars and established a goalkeeper academy for young players. He is an avid fan of Manchester City and has a collection of over forty of their jerseys.
Personal Life
Gunnarsson is married to Hildur Einarsdottir, and they have three children together: Ester Ousk, Gunnleifur Orri, and Artnar Bjarki. Notably, Gunnarsson and his younger sons support Manchester City, while his wife and daughter cheer for Manchester United.
