Castellaneta grew up in Chicago and completed his education at the University of Northern Illinois. During his time in school, he was a member of the school's baseball team. However, his baseball coach, Dick Trout, once said, "Dan was a funny guy, but he threw the ball like a girl."

After graduating from university, Castellaneta started working in one of the theater groups in Chicago.
