Biography of Dave Thomas

Dave Thomas, a Canadian comedian and actor, was born in St. Catharines, Ontario, to John and Morin Thomas. Shortly after his birth, the Thomas family moved to Durham, North Carolina. Dave's father, John Thomas, earned a Ph.D. from Duke University, while his mother played the organ in a church for 30 years. Dave Thomas attended George Watts and Moorehead elementary schools. In 1961, the family returned to Ontario, settling in Dundas. Dave completed his education in the local school and enrolled at McMaster University, where his father taught philosophy. Dave graduated with honors and a bachelor's degree from McMaster University.

Early Career

In 1974, Dave Thomas began his career in the advertising agency McCann Erickson. After a year, he worked in the advertising department of Coca-Cola. This job even required him to move to Toronto, Canada. During his time in Canada, Dave participated in the comedy sketch show "Second City Television." In 1978, he appeared in Dilbert Mann's film "Home to Stay," alongside Hollywood actor Henry Fonda. Dave received an ACTRA AWARD for his role in this film. In 1981, he starred in the film "Stripes," and in 1984, Dave Thomas appeared in the sketch show "The New Show" on NBC. Not only did he act in the show, but he was also an active writer for many episodes. Although only a few episodes of "The New Show" were aired, working with actors such as Buck Henry, George Meyer, Tom Davis, Jim Downey, and Steve Martin proved invaluable experience for Thomas.

Later Career

In 1986, Dave Thomas wrote the script and served as a producer for the show "Steel Collar Man," which aired on CBS. Although the pilot episode was prepared, CBS decided not to air the show at the last moment. Two years later, he presented the show "B Men" on the same network. This time, the show aired, but it had to be canceled after a few months when Dave signed a contract with Paramount Studios and left CBS. In 1989, the film "The Experts" was released, which Dave Thomas directed. On the set, he met John Travolta, who played the lead role in the film, and his wife Kelly Preston.

In the early 90s, Dave Thomas actively participated in various comedy shows. In 1990, he presented "The Dave Thomas Comedy Show" and a year later, he appeared in one of the best television shows of the time, "Public Enemy #2." In 1993, he starred in the ABC TV series "Grace Under Fire" alongside Brett Butler and Tom Poston. He went on to work in films such as "Picture Perfect" and "Mr. Foster's Field Trip."

In 1996, Dave Thomas wrote the book "SCTV: Behind the Scenes" and appeared in the "Red Green Show" alongside his brother Ian. From 1999 to 2002, Thomas appeared in several television comedy shows, making multiple appearances in different roles on "Mission Hill."

In 2002, Dave Thomas was invited to host the annual Canadian Comedy Awards ceremony.

In 2006, he voiced a character in the animated film "Brother Bear 2" and portrayed himself in the film "The Aristocrats." In the same year, he received an Emmy Award for his participation in the show "Off Mikes" on ESPN.

In 2007, Dave Thomas, along with Rick Moranis, presented the comedy show "Bob and Doug McKenzie's Two Four Anniversary." A year later, an animated version of the show titled "Bob & Doug" was released.
