David Arakhamia: Ukrainian Politician and Volunteer
Early Life and EducationDavid Arakhamia was born in Sochi, Russia, on May 23, 1979. He spent some time in Gagra, Georgia, before moving with his parents to Mykolaiv, Ukraine, in 1992 to escape the war in Abkhazia. Arakhamia grew up in Mykolaiv, where he graduated from high school. He later pursued a degree in economics at the European University and a Professional Management program at the Open University London.
Volunteerism and Military Support
In March 2014, Arakhamia launched a website to raise funds for equipment for paratroopers of the 79th Brigade. This marked the inception of the volunteer initiative "People's Project." Arakhamia's extensive volunteer work led to his appointment in 2014 as an adviser on volunteer activities to the chairman of the Mykolaiv Regional State Administration, followed by roles as a delegate for defense procurement and a councilor to the Minister of Defense.
Political Career
Arakhamia's political career began in 2019 when he was appointed to the Supervisory Board of the State Concern "Ukroboronprom" by President Volodymyr Zelensky. He was elected head of the parliamentary faction "Servant of the People." As faction leader, Arakhamia emphasized the importance of preventing internal conflicts and corruption, proposing an electronic monitoring system to mitigate these risks.
Parliamentary Activities
As a member of the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, Arakhamia holds the following positions:
- Head of the Committee on National Security, Defense, and Intelligence
- Head of the Subcommittee on Oversight of Law Enforcement and Intelligence Agencies
- Head of the Investigative Commission on Ammunition Depot Explosions
- Head of the Interparliamentary Relations Group with the United States
Recognition and Awards
Arakhamia has been consistently ranked among the top 100 influential figures in Ukraine by various publications. He has also received awards for his volunteerism, including the Order of Merit, III Degree.
