Early Life and CareerBorn in 1945 in the small town of Chemines, Canton Valais, Micheline Calmy-Rey developed a passion for politics at a young age. In 1968, she graduated from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva. She then spent the next 20 years managing a bookstore.
Political Beginnings
In 1979, Calmy-Rey joined the Social Democratic Party of Switzerland (SP). She quickly rose through the ranks, becoming the party's cantonal president in Geneva. In 1998, she was elected to the Geneva Cantonal Council and served as its finance minister.
Federal Council and Foreign Affairs
In 2002, Calmy-Rey's political career reached new heights when she was elected to the Swiss Federal Council. She became the head of the Department of Foreign Affairs, a position she held for the next eight years. During her tenure, she pursued a policy of "active neutrality" in international relations and advocated for closer integration with the European Union.
Presidency of the Swiss Confederation
In 2007, Calmy-Rey made history by becoming the first woman to serve as President of the Swiss Confederation. She was selected by the Federal Assembly, the country's parliament, and served for one year.
